[link] --- U.S.-IRAQ: Fallon Derided Petraeus, Opposed the Surge By Gareth Porter* WASHINGTON, Sep 12 (IPS) - In sharp contrast to the lionisation of Gen. David Petraeus by members of the U.S. Congress during his testimony this week, Petraeus's superior, Admiral William Fallon, chief of the Central Command (CENTCOM), derided Petraeus as a sycophant during their first meeting in Baghdad last March, according to Pentagon sources familiar with reports of the meeting. Fallon told Petraeus that he considered him to be "an ass-kissing little chickenshit" and added, "I hate people like that", the sources say. That remark reportedly came after Petraeus began the meeting by making remarks that Fallon interpreted as trying to ingratiate himself with a superior. That extraordinarily contentious start of Fallon's mission to Baghdad led to more meetings marked by acute tension between the two commanders. Fallon went on develop his own alternative to Petraeus's recommendation for continued high levels of U.S. troops in Iraq during the summer. The enmity between the two commanders became public knowledge when the Washington Post reported Sep. 9 on intense conflict within the administration over Iraq. The story quoted a senior official as saying that referring to "bad relations" between them is "the understatement of the century". Fallon's derision toward Petraeus reflected both the CENTCOM commander's personal distaste for Petraeus's style of operating and their fundamental policy differences over Iraq, according to the sources. The policy context of Fallon's extraordinarily abrasive treatment of his subordinate was Petraeus's agreement in February to serve as front man for the George W. Bush administration's effort to sell its policy of increasing U.S. troop strength in Iraq to Congress. In a highly unusual political role for an officer who had not yet taken command of a war, Petraeus was installed in the office of Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, in early February just before the Senate debated Bush's troop increase. According to a report in The Washington Post Feb. 7, senators were then approached on the floor and invited to go McConnell's office to hear Petraeus make the case for the surge policy. Fallon was strongly opposed to Petraeus's role as pitch man for the surge policy in Iraq adopted by Bush in December as putting his own interests ahead of a sound military posture in the Middle East and Southwest Asia -- the area for which Fallon's CENTCOM is responsible. The CENTCOM commander believed the United States should be withdrawing troops from Iraq urgently, largely because he saw greater dangers elsewhere in the region. "He is very focused on Pakistan," said a source familiar with Fallon's thinking, "and trying to maintain a difficult status quo with Iran." Is Democracy always mentioned in the same breath as America and other pretending places. Only a semblance of Democracy exists in these countries. Democracy is fine and good in Theory, someone just has to make it happen. Please don't slam poor old Democracy anymore.

Democracy essentially meaning talking to each other and trying to be fair.  

`Demos Kratein' or `Res Publica?' Know the difference? Obviously not. Believe it or not I am not putting you down or slighting you in any way because of your ignorance where political systems are concerned.

``The distinction between our Republic and a democracy is not an idle one. It has great legal significance."

I've an article over at another newslog, ([link] cf:`REPUBLIC vs. DEMOCRACY'), here at NCN, which explains, very nicely, the real difference between these two forms of `Government.' And, of course, you may continue your own, `private,' research into this important matter. Democracies in order to be `functional' require 100% participation. American Demos Kratein, so called, is a mockery of what Jefferson had in mind.

Outsourcing Government was made possible because of `lack of participation' by the mind-controlled (un-educated-and kept that way- but very well educated) constituents of the various rip off artists who work for the corporate body as 'shills' in the shell game known as American Government.

Political Science is a science? Apply Shors' algorithm to it and see what you get.

To loosely go about thinking that democracy equates with freedom and liberty is to totally abuse the word of its' own device. Same goes for Res Publica, another compound of words, meaning essentially 'the `Public Thing.' The German Parliament is called 'the Thing.'

Anyone remember that cool Sci Fi pic called 'The Thing?' James Arness of Martial Matt Dillon fame was the Thing, I believe...


Freedom Rider: Democracy is Dead, Its Movement Time (Part 1)

"The only hope for America is mass dissent."

The American people are utterly alone and completely defenseless from the power of an increasingly authoritarian state. The Bush administration "accidentally" flies nuclear warheads over our cities, seizes American citizens as enemy combatants who can be tortured and held indefinitely, and issues orders to seize assets for "undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq." All of these acts have taken place with the acquiescence of the Democratic party and the national corporate media.

George Bush has historically low approval ratings and controls neither house of Congress, yet he is now in a stronger position than he was just one year ago. His seemingly strange political success should not come as a surprise. Democracy is dead and gone.

Even progressive pundits and activists are loath to admit that we have crossed the point of no return. To their credit, they search for ways to make the Democratic party accountable to voters. They rail and rant about every traitorous act committed by the American establishment that is throwing democracy to the winds. Yet in thinking that the Democratic party can be moved to behave appropriately they too are complicit in ending what is left of the republic.

"Believing that the Democratic party will act in a different manner than it has been is truly delusional."
