For the last 10 years I've tried to grow strawberries and every year the deer seem to keep them clipped back drastically, preventing them from really spreading and filling in their alotted area. I was about to give up last year, figuring that if you want to live out in the country, don't fight nature. Even so, as a last ditch effort, before giving in to the deer and buying my strawberries at the store like everyone else, I came up with a hair-brain idea. And it's working!!

All that grassy looking stuff is garlic. It grows well amidst the strawberries and keeps some other insects at bay. A companion planting solution. ;)

I surrounded the entire bed with small wooden stakes. Then I took yarn, yes, regular knitting yarn, a nice bright color, and strung it not just around the perimeter, but also criss-crossed it back and forth over the entire bed. Oh, I may have to restring it from time to time, but yarn is cheap, it's still a lot more satisfying than going out there and finding every plant neatly chewed to the ground.

For the first time in 10 years, I have tall bushy plants and every day there are a few strawberries waiting for me. Life is sweet!

Why didn't I think of this sooner?

Out here, the birds would steal the yarn. But accually, what you did, has been around forever, and prooves humans ultamatly rediscover old science, in desperation. I had to build fortresses out here to keep the oppertunists at bay. :}

8 Jun 2006 @ 04:59 by hgoodgame : It keeps the dogs and cats out too.
I used to have my cats digging in there and now they don't like it either. For some reason the birds here are very considerate. Even the pie cherries get left alone until I've picked my fill. Hehe, desperation is right! ;)

Ahhhh, that is so Cool, Heidi!... and Thanks for the pic! Glad you did it! ; )/A-d

Every day I get a few strawberries, by next year I expect the entire area to be wall to wall with strawberry plants. ;)

I wonder why the birds don't go for the pie cherries, we have a couple out here, and nothing ever takes off with them, they always get ripe at the same time. But it's a constant war with the Squirels and the Apple trees, lol.

10 Jun 2006 @ 22:23 by hgoodgame : Here the war with the apples
for us is bears! Two years ago a bear broke the heck out of the Fuji apple, the day after we'd picked most of it and I said, Aw, leave a few for the birds. That same night a bear came and climbed into the tree, broke the whole top out to get those few apples. Last year was a poor year for both the apples and cherries but this year promises to be a bumper crop, lots of pies to be made.
Maybe the birds don't like pie cherries, maybe they are too sour? Goodie, more for me, lol.
I think my dog and cats keep squirrels away from the fruit trees, I planted the orchard where the front yard used to be so they are pretty close to the house. With one dog and 2 cats as patrol (they are not just pets but working animals), it does keep down the 'varmint' population considerably.;)
