What's this?

Are Tal and Adriel supposed to play Go, now?

I think, maybe, Jowa and Intetsu, would be more fitting.

I read somewhere (link) that Jowa didn't start out as such a good player (supposedly he was already 21 when he achieved 1-dan.) The story goes that one day after losing a match, he stayed overnight in an old man's house deep in the forest on his way home. The old man gave him a 4 handicap (his master only gave him 3 handicap). Not to be rude Jowa accepted it. In the end, he was shocked to see that all his stones had been captured. He woke up later and found out that this was only a dream.

Jowa actually was already 1-dan at age 16.

Anyway, the story has it that it is only after this dream that he became the good player that he's reputed to have been.

In the version I know, this happens as Jowa is on his way to Musashi (from Edo.) It's night, and his spirit is pretty low---something to do with his poor performance in a game he has recently played (against Nagasaka, I think.) It's dark and Jowa gets lost. Eventually he sees a light, he walks to it, hopping for some place to stay for the night, and he ends up in a cottage with a white-bearded old man. There is a go board, but Jowa (actually still called Matsunosuke at the time) is surprised to see both bowls contain white stones. They play. Then the old man shouts, "Don't you know what the score is?" Whereupon Jowa wakes up at the side of the road.

Hey, I know that story. It sounds a lot like a variation of “Wang the Firewood Collector”.

I am sure you do.

The story is from Tan China, and it is also well know in Japan from the Konjaku Monogateri.
