Morning class in Economics with Elesio, Randy, Lucasta, Elizabeth, and Dan. We go through supply and demand. Good repore with this group. Told ‘em to go see the movie, The Corporation, [link] which I saw last night at the Guild. Don’t often get around downtown, and the younger people are standing around the microbrewery near the theatre socializing. The lights of the street are all ablaze. Would all of this be in darkness, where would these youngsters be?
The Guild is the last continuously functioning old single screen theatre in Albuquerque, and the current owners for about a year now have been serving up a varying menu of the old and the new, the classic and the contemporary, changing shows every two, three or four days, sometimes a one nighter, and other fare for thoughtful folks. There’s about twenty or thirty patrons at last night’s show in a theatre that would hold 200. Maybe the boys and girls outside the microbrewery have already seen this movie. This is this movie’s second time around through ABQ through the Guild. First time got good response. There was a call for a return, but now this return does not seem to be drawing many customers, so the owner / ticket seller and his partner the popcorn manager tell me in the small lobby area before the show. The owner walks up the single aisle to the foot of the old stage and gives his customers a little personal introduction to the movie he is about to show and a few remarks about shows coming up next week. Movie house with a personal touch. Here is the preview to the season of Lights Going Out in the City.
Actually, when you think about it, that might be a fairly good way to shut off the nuclear threat to this planet. Shut off the electricity. That, of course, would create displacements in its own right. Nevertheless, the economic and political turmoil that is beginning to proliferate and ripple through the industrialized world may necessitate radical readjustments in demographic patterning anyway. So much attention seems to be directed towards the energy requirements of the automotive and industrial sectors in general, that the one defining characteristic of our current lifestyle that is deeply ingrained in many of our lives, the fact that we live with electric light through the night, doesn’t seem to be getting very much attention.
Where are you going to be when the lights go out? What are you going to do when the lights go out? Who are you going to be around in the neighborhood when the lights go out? Are you in a community of friends who can work together for a common purpose?
Afternoon class was with my Globalization and World Culture class; with Evan and Michael, and Dean, and Joe and Victoria and Yolanda, and Michelle, and Jason; Will and Leander came in today, and Cheralene called in sick, so I told them all about the movie I saw last night, and this class being about globalization and all gave me a chance to open up a little about how I thought they might want to start thinking about the world around them as differentiated from the traditional model. Slightly more interesting than the textbook material we are required to cover, not that it’s all that bad. Just needs a little spice from a more critical perspective. Victoria is listening closely, as is just about everyone in their own way, and Evan and I, of course will always have something to disagree about, although we do have some good common ground. Finish off the afternoon session with a showing of Life and Debt, a critical perspective on how the IMF shortchanged the Jamaican economy. [link]
Where are you gonna be when the lights go out?

Thank you for introducing this film. I hope it comes to Las Cruces. Now that our government -- legislature, executive branch, courts and news media are owned and controlled by the major corporations, it is even more important to support movements like the Greens and other activists. Hmm, corporations and religios zealots are enjoying greater freedom while we lose our human rights, don't you think?

14 Dec 2004 @ 18:42 by koravya : Quite a combination
Corporations and relegious zealots.
Perhaps has something to do with the domination factor.
The quality of corporate subservience to the profit motive
is astonishing in its criminal social mentality.
And it goes on, and on, and on,
and is not very much a subject of discussion
in my daily city newpaper.
I remember a statement from Noam Chomsky.
Paraphrased. The corporate and political powers
dont' care what anyone thinks. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks.
What matters is what you / people/ whoever, does, do.
End paraphrase.
The mindset of the population who follow the Albuquerque Daily newspaper
think what the paper thinks.
It provides them with the paramaters of discussion.
And recently, I've been noticing this phrase "talking points"
come up, as in, one party or the other has "talking points"
concerning current issues. Like its all some kind of little
school room debate, and whoever wins the most points gets the trophy.
And everybody down here in the street gets to watch the show, and even express our opinion. Go ahead and express your opinion. Scream at the top of your lungs. Just don't, whatever you do, actually do something.
Just go to work, and pay your bills, and the corporate Godfather will insure that your peace of mind is in good faith with divine intention.

I would think that this film, The Corporation, will come out on DVD sooner or later, hopefully sooner. Second time through the theatre did'nt draw the crowd it did the first time a year ago. Unfortunately, it's what you might call a "special interest" film, and has not gotten the big go-around that Farenhiet 9/11 did. The chasm between those who see and appreciate it, and those who will not see it, whether they actually sit in front of it or not, is wide.

John, you have introduced such an important and valuable contribution here. As we all know, our politicians come from corporations and return to them when they leave office. Many are rewarded for their support of corporate profits during their tenure and continue the cycle of abuse, neglect and greed of humanity as one body when they leave office. It is just a revolving door. "Buyer Beware" is truly a slogan that can be translated into--Humanity Beware. We are an endangered species as long as we have CEO's and corporations calling the shots. What can we do about it?

Thanks.

Sixth day of the Rhythmic Moon; kin 144; Yellow Magnetic Seed, Guided by Flowering; December 18. We are dwelling in the belly of the beast, and we are in our hearts very indigestible to this devourer of souls. This beast shall succumb to its own misery and putrefy, and out of the soil of the rotting corpse shall the true spirit of human life take root and flower. There has always been and continues to be the world of the enlightened ones who know the path of empathy and truth. As the illusory world of domination and greed melts in its own cesspool, the dragon cowers further into darkness and its blind thrashings topple its monument to itself. It is for those of us who seek the true light to build anew cities of light where men and women are once again true brothers and sisters. We have always been here in the countryside and in the cities of every continent and island, and the darkness surrounding us seems to get very dark at times, but we are the light, and without us, humanity is surely doomed. We do not need to worry about what we need to do, for we are doing it by being who we are, and all of our decisions shall be in accordance with the intention of truth and the nurturing of life. We are not light in victory over darkness, nor in the domination over darkness. We are a culmination in the evolutionary process which has brought the human into being. Not every member of the species gets that far, but more and more of us are, and this is the only direction there is to go, and any alternative is a dead end. Make your decisions from an evolutionary point of view. We are going there. You can tell those around you where you are going and invite them to the path, but it is each and every one’s decision, depending on how deeply they have been gifted and taught to see. Some of the light you put forth shall fall upon brick walls, and some shall shine through crystal mirrors. We are everywhere, in places oftentimes where one might least expect to find us, and we are always home.

This is very beautiful and meaningful response for those of us living as "strangers in a strange land." I know that you are right on with the direction we are headed and with the recognition that "we are the culmination in the evolutionary process. Thank you very much.
